Kathleen Isabella Metcalfe Mackie (1899–1996) was born in Ulster at the end of the Victorian era to Arthur and Phoebe Metcalfe. Her father came from Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, with a family background of breweries, flax mills and quarries that serviced the Industrial Revolution. Her mother was a fourth generation Pringle from Co Monaghan who was brought up under the thatch of Derramore House (now National Trust property ‘Derrymore’) at Bessbrook outside Newry, County Armagh
