Leo Higgins’ name is synonymous with technical expertise; yet his approach never results in the sterility of such a capacity can engender, argues Gerry Walker
Dublin-born sculptor Leo Higgins (Fig 1) belongs to a 6,000-year-old artistic tradition that embraced and informed the great European and Eastern civilizations. In Europe, the Bronze Age is generally dated from 4,000 BC, although the same conventional wisdom suggests that it took a further two millennia for the phenomenon to reach Ireland. The process of bronze smelting and casting was well established in Ireland for at least a thousand years before the birth of Christ. The techniques associated with these processes have barely changed throughout the millennia.
