There can be no doubting the fact that Richard Hamilton is a truly important artist. One reason, of course, is that he was one of the first artists who prepared the ground for what would become a seismic event in mid-20th century art history. This was the origination of Pop art. However, it must be acknowledged that Hamilton’s significance rests on a much broader range of achievements than simply being a mid-wife at the birth of an art movement.
