Phyllis Arnold continues the miniaturist’s art of capturing informal portraits of loved ones, writes Paul Caffrey
Phyllis Arnold is a unique artist working in Ireland where she carries on the traditional techniques of painting miniatures in watercolour mixed with egg yolk on calf-skin vellum and silhouettes on plaster. Her subject matter ranges from portraiture to still-life painting of animals and birds. Technically accomplished, she builds up these tiny images in layers of paint composed of minute brushstrokes of dotted stippling and cross hatching.
