Isabella Evangelisti finds a Chinese aesthetic mediated by a Western Modernist approach in Kwok Tsui’s paintings
The paintings of Kwok Tsui reflect the hybrid nature of his life and work. Born in Hong Kong, he came to Northern Ireland aged sixteen, completed his artistic studies at Ulster University in 2020 and is currently nearing the completion of his master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in London. His forthcoming solo exhibition at the MAC in Belfast will showcase work completed in the last two years. Kwok comes from one of the most ancient cultures in the world, but has spent more than half his life in Ireland, with the result that his work has an identifiable Chinese aesthetic mediated by a Western Modernist approach to painting that he acquired through his education and experience in the West.
