Desmond Egan considers the career of sculptor James McKenna, the subject of a major retrospective at IMMA this winter

James McKenna was born in Dublin and brought up near Kilcool, County Wicklow as a foster child. Educated there and in Bray Technical College, he studied at National College of Art & Design (1950 to 1955) where he won a Macaulay Scholarship. This brought him to Italy where he encountered the work of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance
