Hilary Pyle recalls the powerful influence of Henri Matisse on Alicia Boyle’s artistic development.

The recent exhibition of the art books of Henri Matisse, in the Chester Beatty Library, prompted thoughts of his considerable influence on his 20th-century European contemporaries. One example is the Irish artist Alicia Boyle (1908–1997). She wrote of the impact of “his splendid North African colour and the freedom of his drawing”, and her sketchbooks, first exhibited in her second retrospective at the Crawford Gallery, Cork, in 1988, and now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, are evidence of this, and in particular of the effect of his line on her.
