John Schwatschke’s subject matter and style may evoke sources, but his biting Germanic brand of satire belongs to Horace not Juvenal, writes Gerry Walker
In the course of a long career Irish artist John Schwatschke has produced a prodigious body of work comprising academic celebrity portraiture, caricature (sketches and portraits), and sculpture. Born in Dublin in 1943 to Austrian and Irish parents he finally settled on the study of art in 1963 having pursued his interests in architecture and music up to that point. In 1996 his catalogue raisonne listed almost 1,000 works. Yet he remains relatively unknown amidst the cultural landscape of contemporary Ireland.
