The big picture

Clement McAleer’s panoramic views delve into nature’s underlying structure, writes Liam Kelly ahead of his winter exhibition at the Hamilton Gallery, Sligo

The big picture

Clement McAleer is a consummate painter of landscapes at the peak of his powers in manipulating paint. Whether that is to allow clouds to dramatically swirl, light to filter and flirt during the day, or to reveal the delights and colours of a landscape at night, he is drawn to experiment with the architectural possibilities of structuring pictorial composition. His travels in Europe as well as in Ireland have prompted generalized amalgams of landscape rather than views of specific places. Over the years he has explored various formats and viewpoints to register such compounds of place.
