From ally to outsider

Sarah Cecilia Harrison came from a prosperous Northern Irish family steeped in politics, so perhaps it was somewhat inevitable that from the time she arrived in Dublin, in 1889, she would immerse herself in the political and social fabric of city life, devoting herself wholeheartedly to many campaigns and becoming deeply involved in philanthropic, political, civic and artistic efforts. In tandem with these activities, Harrison established herself as a well-respected portrait painter and became one of Hugh Lane’s staunchest supporters and closest allies in the campaign for the establishment of a modern art gallery for Dublin.
